280/365/Scary Stuff

While I wait for The Cabin in the Woods to arrive from Netflix (it’s been on my list for years, but Kim’s mention of it and this project have bumped it up to position 1), I’ve decided to watch Season 1 of that other Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard project, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while I work out on my elliptical. I watch the series through every few years. I love it for its writing, humor, natural feminism. In Whedon’s worlds, the sexes are so equal that accepting this as normal is like breathing. Letting your brain live in this normalcy is quietly empowering. And when the day really does need to be saved, you know it’s gonna be a girl kicking the requisite ass.

  1. Love Buffy. Good to watch a hellmouth that I can understand, rather than this one that I cannot.

  2. Haven't seen Buffy, but maybe I can get it through Amazon Prime. I'm remembering Nancy Drew. I read all those books, and wonder why she didn't empower generations of women. Did she get too much help from George? Oh, wait--George was a girl too.

  3. I've never really watched Buffy. But maybe I should, for the same reason. I'm watching Anne with an E, which is also quietly feminist. (And the actor Anne looks exactly like our Charlie.)

  4. I don't know why I never watched Buffy. I think the premise seemed silly to me when it came out. Since then, everyone I know who has seen it seems to love it, so the "silly" argument doesn't hold water. I'll have to get on it before Netflix Canada drops it from our list.
