278/365/Scary Stuff

I don’t seek out scary movies. I don’t want to be scared for scared’s sake. I’ve never seen Deliverance. After all, I love the outdoors and don’t want it associated with scary stuff.

I avoid horror, but when it’s combined with humor, I’m in. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Shaun of the Dead. Night of the Living Deb. Get Out. I need that buffer to relieve the . . . tension. (Love that Rocky Horror Picture Show.)

I’ve become convinced that good horror is good social commentary. Good metaphor. Still, I approach cautiously.

I first saw The Silence of the Lambs maybe five years ago. Seriously. But I watched it while I was on my elliptical. It helps when I’m already running.

  1. Jaws taught me that I re-dream scary things, and it ruined swimming for a long time. So I don't seek scary movies out either. But Tucker & Dale is perfection...as is Cabin in the Woods. Great post.

  2. I keep meaning to watch Cabin in the Woods. And still I'm a little scared...

    1. I just put it at the top of my Netflix list. Should be here next week.

    2. It has creepy bits, and violent bits, but builds so wonderfully to some real cathartic shit. Hope you like it as much as I did!

  4. I have only seen Shaun of the Dead from your examples of scary + humor and that was because I sort of had to. I admit that I really liked it.

  5. I haven't seen Silence of the Lambs, and I never will. I'm not familiar with the other titles you mentioned. Does that give you a clue how I feel about scary movies?

PS: I didn't realize Netflix still mailed CDs. If you ever decide to switch to streaming, Amazon puts their Fire Stick on sale fairly often. Super easy.

  6. I've never heard of a fire stick. Thanks Susan.
    And I LOVE horror.
