102/365/People in 56/Sarah

Her parents died together in a car accident: no living without the other, no drawn-out sufferings of aging. Their dog died soon after. Sarah fetched all the ashes the same day: parents in cardboard boxes and masking tape, dog in a velvet-lined wooden box with a message to meet him at the end of the rainbow.

  1. Wow, this post brings up a lot of thoughts and emotions. I did a bit of a double-take at the contrast between the packaging for the human and canine ashes, and even giggled nervously.

  2. That I'm smiling at the end of reading this disturbs me greatly.

  4. Did Sarah also laugh? I think I would have.

Howie came back to us in a ceramic vase with his name inscribed. Not sure what that cost us, but I would have preferred a small cardboard box that didn't make us feel like we had to keep it.

    1. Sarah was telling the story in a fashion to get the most laughs. It was wonderful.

  5. I was immediately reminded of this post, which most of you read in 2010. I wonder if that guy is still in the business. And if he still answers the phone.
