60/365/Secrets and Lies in 56

My parents are hoarders. It feels like the greatest shame of my life, but it isn’t me. But it also is. Alison and I were pushed out by stuff. The house adds a complicated layer to all the other shit going on. I’ve known for forty years that this would be my problem at the end.

  1. Either you told me this or I inferred it from something you said. I am sorry that happened to you and your sister. I recently finished reading a novel in which a main character's mother was a horder. It really hadn't occurred to me how that could impact their children until I read that book.

    1. Dona, what's the title? (And this situation is ongoing...)

    2. I think the title is Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty.

  2. This hits close to home. My parents weren't hoarders, and I'm not either. But I have a lot of STUFF. Even my most organized friends with ample closet space have accumulated a lot of STUFF.

  3. Oh no. How hard that must be. My friend's mother is a hoarder with a TV episode-worthy home. I remember as kids walking sideways up the stairs to get to her bedroom.

  4. This definitely feels like a secret, but really we shouldn't assume that. Reminds me of a poetry seminar long ago...

    1. I've only read Kim's comment after I wrote mine. Now I feel ashamed. This month is going to be tricky!

    2. Ha! Kim must be referring to my challenging the assumption of the sex of the narrator way back when. Don't feel ashamed, Mali! We all will be assuming many things. In this case, this is a secret, not a lie. But I promise to tell some lies. Unless that is a lie.

  5. I have stuff too. My mother did the Swedish death purge without knowing she was doing it, so I can only imagine what it will be like for you. I'm really sorry you're going to have to deal with this.
