Depends how old the mother is, doesn't it? I don't like the idea of confronting an old, frail and vulnerable woman, but she needs to know for sure, right? (I think I'm losing track - I need to reread this all through at once.)
What was Jack's reasoning for telling her mother though? That's a tricky one...
